Transition into Year 7

We would like to offer you a very warm welcome to Ysgol Nantgwyn.

We understand that the transition from Year 6 into Year 7 to Ysgol Nantgwyn can bring a variety of changes and challenges for all pupils.  It is our priority to ensure all pupils’ progress to Year 7 as confident and happy individuals. Therefore, this section of the website aims to explain the process at Ysgol Nantgwyn and to answer some of your queries.

The period of transition can be quite daunting for pupils and even parents/guardians. We will always aim to provide support and guidance to pupils in Year 4, 5 and 6 as you begin to make preparations to transition into Year 7 pupils in order to make their transition and integration as easy as possible.

We are one of the best performing schools in the Rhondda and take great pride in our school and community. Our pupils are happy, challenged and motivated to achieve their full potential in a caring, supportive and inclusive environment.

In Year 7, there are currently four Caru Dysgu classes (form classes) which remain together throughout all of their lessons. Pupils register with their form tutor in the morning to start the day in a positive way. They will build a relationship with their pupils and will be on hand to help, support and advise as pupils development during their time with us.

Teaching groups are mixed ability and pupils will be taught as a teaching group in most subjects.

Open Evening

In September, we hold an Open Evening giving you the opportunity to see what we do and to visit all faculty areas, meet staff and current pupil. This is always a lively and enjoyable evening which provides pupils with the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities using our excellent facilities and resources.   There is an opportunity to hear from the Headteacher, Head of Middle School and to ask questions that you may have.

Visits to Primary Schools: For pupils in cluster primary schools
Throughout the school year, the Middle School team have regular contact with cluster schools and will visit all primary schools in order to speak to pupils and introduce the school. These visits are a really important part of the process as they allow us to get to know the pupils – and the pupils to get to know us.
We also take the opportunity to speak to Year 6 teachers and key staff at the primary schools in order to ensure that we know about our pupils and that we make appropriate arrangements for their transition to us.

Pupils are also asked at these visits to name two or three pupils that they know and might like to be in the same Caru Dysgu class as them. We do our best to meet these requests in order to help pupils settle easily and quickly into their new school. However, we cannot always accommodate these requests as we need to balance the pastoral and academic needs of pupils. We always listen really carefully to the advice from Year 6 teachers to ensure our arrangements lead to great learning experiences and opportunities. It is also important to bear in mind that friendship groups develop and change and there is always an opportunity to make new friends at Ysgol Nantgwyn.

During these visits pupils will be given an information booklet and other relevant letters.

Induction Days

There are several induction days which are held in the summer term and will be an opportunity for Year 5 and 6 pupils who have chosen to come to Ysgol Nantgwyn or are considering the school to spend quality time with us. There will be an opportunity to meet the form tutor and to take part in activities. These include taster lessons in a wide range of subjects, activities and games and tours of the school.

Transition Thursdays
At Ysgol Nantgwyn we recognise the importance of increasing opportunities for all Year 5 and 6 pupils currently in Ysgol Nantgwyn and in our cluster schools. Therefore, pupils will be invited throughout the year to participate in our amazing transition Tuesday activities such as pizza making, cake decorating, sports, arts and crafts and many more. These activities are to provide pupils with the opportunity to meet new friends, become familiar with the school, staff and facilities and to ease the transition process.
Uniform Grant
All uniform requirements are detailed on the school website and further information will be provided to all pupils during transition activities. It is possible to get a grant from the Welsh Assembly to help with uniform costs, more information is available here. The school will also support families where possible.
