Please find below links in relation Omegle.com, a website/application platform that is deemed to have significant risks to pupils. The app contains harmful sexual content and access to personal data including locations. Children, young people and parents are advised to delete this app.

If a child/young person has been a victim of online harm/exploitation then they should report this to 101 and where required appropriate safeguarding referrals should be made. If it is believed a child is at immediate risk then emergency services should be contacted by ringing 999.

Please familiarise yourself with the information below which outlines the associated risks when using the social media application Wizz. 

Wizz is a free social networking app that enables users to chat live online with strangers from around the world and exchange gifs, pictures, and videos. It is intended to be a place to make online friends however it works similarly to a dating app, where you are presented with other people's profiles and can choose to either swipe them away or swipe to start a conversation.

You must be 16 years or older to have a profile on Wizz and it includes age verification that is meant to vet your entered date of birth against a photo you supply of your face however it does allow younger users to create an account and the verification process is easy to get around.

What are the risks?

Once on the app, young people are able to mix with adults and can be connected if they accept each others' friend requests. Harmful content can easily be found and users can also expect to see content including swearing, sexual content, violence, drug/substance content, and much more either on others' profiles or in chat conversations.

The whole point of Wizz is chatting with strangers and, without a guarantee of age verification and chat moderation, catfishing, grooming, and online sexual abuse are all a possibility.

The trend focuses on people recording “reaction videos” while searching for a term that brings them to a specific type of illegal, sexual online content. The videos are alarming and would cause distress to many of our pupils. From what the guidance experts have discovered, the explicit material found in this trend is not hosted on TikTok but the video submissions of reactions are.

We have been notified by the local authority of a dangerous website and app aimed at children. The app "Monkey", is billed as a cross between Omegle and TikTok. There are some concerns over the nature of this app and how it might be used to exploit children, it allows users to have video calls with strangers. The platform markets itself as "an alternative to Omegle, with a TikTok vibe''. A review of the platform has found that it contains large amounts of inappropriate, disturbing, and harmful content transmitted via web cameras.

Please can you be vigilant regarding the apps downloaded to your child's device and we advise if this app is installed that it is removed from the device with appropriate parental controls added to the device with immediate effect. We are sending this message to parents/guardians of all pupils across Ysgol Nantgwyn due to the very disturbing nature of the content available on the app.
